Health care proponents seizing back the term "Obamacare"

MANCHESTER, NH - Granite State Progress is joining in the "Thanks Obamacare!" phenomenon taking off across the country.

The new education campaign is an initiative of the Colorado Consumer Health Initiative and ProgressNow Colorado Education to highlight the benefits of the federal health care reform law passed in 2010.

"We really liked the concept because the reality is these new reforms are helping families and small businesses take back their health care," said Zandra Rice Hawkins, director of Granite State Progress. "We're proud that President Obama made real health care solutions a top priority during his campaign and administration."

Granite Staters take a particular interest in ensuring the new health law works; many had followed Obama and other candidates from event to event during the 2004 and 2008 Presidential campaigns to encourage candidates to talk about their positions on health care, and then actively campaigned for strong health reform measures during the federal debate.

The official Thanks Obamacare education campaign hosts the Thanks Obamacare! website with things such as the top 10 reasons Americans have to thank Obamacare. Reason #1:  Congress will have the same health care as the rest of us; Reason #5: Insurance companies can't kick sick people off coverage. A short online video highlights how the debate over healthcare reform was clouded by fear and anger but that "care won out," citing increased access to healthcare coverage for the uninsured, lowered cost and improved quality.

"This campaign has already reached hundreds of thousands in Colorado and across the country with its unique message," Rice Hawkins said. "We wanted to bring some of that excitement and understanding to New Hampshire, where people are still learning about the benefits of the reforms."

Granite State Progress will join others across the country in regularly using the hashtag #thanksobamacare on Twitter, and intends to display the messages at events in New Hampshire from time to time.
